The Titanic Commemorative Dinner 14 April 2012

I am looking forward to a Titanic First Class Evening  and a memorable night out in Wellington next weekend. The evening menu replicates the last dinner presented for first class passengers on board RMS Titanic a century ago on Sunday the 14th of April, 1912.
Charles de Villiers, Executive Chef at Wellington's  James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor has followed the menu enjoyed on that last night combining some of the eleven courses into eight. He promises a memorable first class dining experience.  So many events around the world have been recreating that evening, and the first class menu. Its quite an international theme.

Three DVD clips from the Mir submersible visits to Titanic will set the scene for the guest speaker Trevor (Monty) Montgomery.  Monty is a veteran deep ocean explorer who has dived in Mir submersibles to the Titanic (12,500 feet), to the Bismark (14,400) and to the thermal vents in the Pacific (8,800).  It should be an educational as well as a fun evening. Many people have said they will be coming in costume.

For Coastguard Wellington, Monty has gifted authentic items from his dive to Titanic which will be auctioned during the evening to help Coastguard Wellington fund a new special service craft. I wonder if I will be lucky? I will try to take some photos of the various costumes to post.

I have very been busy sewing my own costumes and trying to get my husband's waistcoat finished ready for an event like this. (In between trying to finish Blouse #0191 neck trim and pulling weeds out of the garden as the weather was so lovely.)
I had such a time this afternoon getting ready to join the lining with the waistcoat- pressing and tacking. But it just didn't work. You'll laugh at this... I finally checked the pattern pieces again against the instructions.  I had cut out a mens' waistcoat with a women's front lining!  All beautifully sewn separately until the time when I was to join them together. I unpicked the wrong pieces and went through my complete fabric stash and remnants to cut out the correct pieces. Of course I had all colours of material suitable for lining, but not the fine black lining that I needed. So I will have to cut out my new blouse to go with the jacket and skirt I made instead, until the shops open again.  Oh well,  there still Easter Monday.... before I go to work.

Well the Gentlemen's vest sunk with the Titianic. No more matching material to be had and no more time. So as you can see I finished my costume and here it is.
